    Should you “.CA” or not?

The domain extension having specific country code indicates to search engines which country your content is targeted at.

Even if you do go with a .com or other domain extension as your primary URL, it is recommended to register the . ca variation. This will not only protect your brand or trademark, but your .ca will also improve the opportunities for people to find your website if searching from within Canada.

According to research conducted by the Strategic Council, 85% of Canadians prefer to be on a . CA domain than a .com when supporting local businesses. It’s more Candian.

  • Selecting your website name

    Selecting your website name

Selecting a domain name can be one of the most important steps in establishing your brand. Your domain name is often one of the first things someone sees, and it can affect their impression of your site and your brand.

A carefully chosen domain name may increase user interest and drive web traffic, while a carelessly chosen one may do the opposite.

While it isn’t an exact science, and there are few absolute rules, here are some guiding principles for picking a name that reflects and helps your brand.

  • What domain should I get?

    What domain should I get?

Get the world’s most popular domain

    • Millions of .com domain names have already been purchased. Got yours?

Unveiled in January 1985, the .com extension was one of the very first Top-Level Domains (TLD) and has since grown to become the world’s most popular. Dozens of other TLDs are now available, but no matter how many new extensions get added, everyone agrees — .com domains are still the world’s most popular.

When you register .com, it puts you right next to some of the internet’s most established brands, as it’s been there since the start of the internet. Short as dot com sounds, it can speak volumes about your credibility and go a long way in building confidence that you aren’t a fly-by-night operation — you’re here for the long run.

    • The .com domain: A reputation established over time.

Back when the internet was just beginning to transition from science fiction to everyday use, .com domain names were among the first TLDs replacing strings of numbers that had served as web addresses. In 1985, a computer manufacturer in Massachusetts registered the first .com domain. By the end of that year, there were a total of six domains registered worldwide (compared with the hundreds of millions today).
    • What else can a .com domain do?

Compared to the days when .com launched, there are hundreds of options for setting up an online presence. But even with all the new choices, people buy .com over others for a number of solid reasons. A .com domain:

      • Gives you credibility in the online world. It’s the go-to for anyone looking to establish themselves on the web.
      • Can be purchased by anyone. Although initially intended for businesses, there are no restrictions on who can register a .com.
      • Is extremely versatile. Some domains suggest something specific, but .com can work for any type of website.
    • Register .com to protect your brand.

According to Verisign, the registry handling .com domains, this TLD accounts for nearly a third of the more than 335 million domains (and growing) registered today. Registrations for the two most common domains, .com and .net, alone will gain millions of new registrations each year. With .com touching nearly everything imaginable online, it’s a good idea to protect your brand.
    • Don’t let your .com domain name getaway.

While it’s a fact that millions of .com domains have already been registered, there’s still lots of potential in this popular domain extension. It’s very possible there’s a creative alternate way to brand yourself with dot com. If not, perhaps someone is done using a .com domain name that would be perfect for you and it’s back on the open market. Or maybe your idea is so awesome that nobody has thought of it before. When you find the perfect .com, make sure you grab it fast.

    HTTPS as a ranking signal

Security is a top priority for Google. We invest a lot in making sure that our services use industry-leading security, like strong HTTPS encryption by default. That means that people using Search, Gmail and Google Drive, for example, automatically have a secure connection to Google.

Beyond our own stuff, we’re also working to make the Intern
et safer more broadly. A big part of that is making sure that websites people access from Google are secure. For instance, we have created resources to help webmasters prevent and fix security breaches on their sites.

We want to go even further. At Google I/O a few months ago, we called for “HTTPS everywhere” on the web.

We’ve also seen more and more webmasters adopting HTTPS (also known as HTTP over TLS, or Transport Layer Security), on their website, which is encouraging.

For these reasons, over the past few months we’ve been running tests taking into account whether sites use secure, encrypted connections as a signal in our search ranking algorithms. We’ve seen positive results, so we’re starting to use HTTPS as a ranking signal. Read the original article from Google

  • 10 tips for a perfect website name

10 tips for a perfect website name

Choosing a domain name is similar to choosing a company name — it requires a lot of thought and consideration. Your domain name is your identity on the web. Of course you want to make sure you choose a name that not only fits your business, but is also easy to find and promote.

Here are some tips to help you pick the perfect domain name

    1. Make it easy to type
Finding a domain name that’s easy to type is critical to online success. If you use slang (u instead of you) or words with multiple spellings (express vs. xpress), it might be harder for customers to find your site.
    2. Keep it short
If your domain name is long and complex, you risk customers mistyping or misspelling it. Short and simple is the way to go.
    3. Use keywords
Try using keywords that describe your business and the services you offer. For example, if you’re a glass replacement business, you may want to register GlassRepair.com or GlassReplacement.com.
Include the keywords that people enter when searching for your products or services.
It helps improve your rank on search engines (which increases traffic) and just makes more sense to your customers.
    4. Target your area
If your business is local, consider including your city or state in your domain name to make it easy for local customers to find and remember. Example: PhoenixGlassRepair.com.
    5. Avoid numbers and hyphens
Numbers and hyphens are often misunderstood — people who hear your website address don’t know if you’re using a numeral (5) or it’s spelled out (five) or they misplace or forget the dash. If you need these in your domain, register the different variations to be safe.
    6. Be memorable
There are millions of registered domain names, so having a domain that’s catchy and memorable is essential. Once you’ve come up with a name, share it with close friends to make sure it sounds appealing and makes sense to others.

      Quick solution:
Got a great idea for a domain? Register your name today and put a website out there before someone else beats you to it.
    7. Research it
Make sure the name you’ve selected isn’t trademarked, copyrighted or being used by another company. It could result in a huge legal mess that could cost you a fortune, as well as your domain!
    8. Use an appropriate domain name extension
Extensions are suffixes, such as .com or .net, at the end of web addresses. These can have specific uses, so make sure to choose one that works for your business. The .com domain extension is far and away the most popular, but it can be tough to get a short and memorable .com domain name because it’s been around for so long.A bevy of new generic top-level domains — like .photography, .nyc and .guru — offer a great opportunity to register short and highly relevant names. And here are some other top extensions and how they’re often used:.co : an abbreviation for company, commerce, and community.
      .info : informational sites.
.net : technical, Internet infrastructure sites.
.org : non-commercial organizations and nonprofits.
.biz : business or commercial use, like e-commerce sites.
.me : blogs, resumes or personal sites.Pro tip: You don’t need to build a website for every domain. Just forward any additional domains to your primary website.
    9. Protect and build your brand
To protect your brand, you should purchase various domain extensions, as well as misspelled versions of your domain name. This prevents competitors from registering other versions and ensures your customers are directed to your website, even if they mistype it.
    10. Act fast
Domain names sell quickly. Thankfully, they’re also inexpensive, so register your favorite domain names as soon as possible. If you’re having trouble finding an available name, domain registrars like GoDaddy will suggest alternate names during your domain search to help you find the perfect domain name.

Now don’t just sit there, lock down your website name before its too late.
